Whats the best/cheapest way to accept credit card payments on my website without using paypal?

I would suggest using clickbank.com i use them a lot for affiliate sales put it can go through your link it doesnt have to be with an affiliate link. The set up is the easiest you will find. Customers still have the choice to pay by paypal so you are not loosing customers and the 1st three payments are sent through the post and then you can set it up to pay it straight into your bank account.
